| Mauritius is an island nation located off the coast of east Africa in the southwest Indian Ocean. Its closest neighbouring country is Madagascar. The population of Mauritius is highly multi-ethnic. Most of the people are descendants of people from the Indian subcontinent. In addition, there are large numbers of immigrants from continental Africa, Madagascar, France, Britain and China. The official language is English, with all government administrative documents written in English. French is also used in the educational system, as well as in the media, both broadcast and printed. Mauritian Creole, which is derived from French is also widely spoken on the island, and is considered the native tongue. There are also Hindi, Arabic, Tamil, Cantonese and Mandarin speakers on the island. A majority of the people practice Hinduism. There are sizeable numbers who also practice Christianity and Islam. The remainder practice Buddhism and Sikhism. Mauritius has developed from a low-income, agriculturally based economy to a middle income diversified economy with a vibrant financial and tourist sectors. The country has one of the highest GDP per capita in Africa and is a country with a mature wealthy economy with income distributed evenly among its citizens. |
